January Newsletter

During the month of January, we will begin a unit on animals.  We will learn about how animals are classified and study the characteristics of mammals, birds, fish, insects, reptiles, and amphibians.

Some of the ELA standards that we will cover are:

-Predict events in a story (i.e., what will happen next)

-With prompting and support, dictate, as a group, a retelling of a story that has been heard

-When asked, point to specific examples of letters and numerals in the classroom environment and/or on a page

We will continue to read and respond to non-fiction and fiction texts and work on letter sounds.

This week, we will continue our 3rd math module, counting to answer questions of how many.  This module will last until the end of February.

The standards we will cover are:

-Count to tell the number of objects.

-Compare numbers.

-Sort objects and count the number of objects in each category.

For religion, we will learn about both the patroness’ of our school, St. Brigid and Our Lady of Hope.

In science, we will be observing and learning about the characteristics of winter and about animals who hibernate and migrate.

During social studies, we will be learning about the basic needs of animals and how they are the same as our own.  We will also learn about the life and work of Martin Luther King Jr.
