Archbishop Saint Oscar Romero

On Sunday, October 14 a number of new Saints will be canonized in Rome.  Among them will be Pope Paul VI and Archbishop Oscar Romero.  Romero was the Archbishop of San Salvador, El Salvador.  He was martyred while saying mass on March 24, 1980 at the beginning of the Salvadoran Civil War.  Many refugees from the civil war settled in Westbury and St. Brigid’s.  Our Pastor at the time, Rev. Fred Schaefer offered the hospitality of the rectory - the priests’ residence - to a number of refugees during this time.  The Canonization of Archbishop Romero is a time of special significance for our Salvadoran sisters and brothers as well as the entire Church.  Attached is a Pastoral Letter from Bishop Barres to commemorate the occasion.
