As part of their homework, first graders are asked to read for 20 minutes each day. This can include your child reading to you or being read to. You may choose books, magazines, comic books (even an electronic reading game is okay) as long as the child is spending time with the written word.
Please help your child find reading materials that are interesting to him/her. This time you spend reading together is so valuable in helping your child to become an independent reader and develop fluency.
Every month the children will receive a reading log to keep track of their reading. Please fill it in each week and return it to school each Monday. The reading log includes Saturday and Sunday, but only 5 days are expected to be completed each week. When those weeknights get busy, (and they will!) you may choose to make up some reading time on the weekend.
